Attractions Near Kaziranga
Kaziranga National Park is a wild place in Assam that is known because of its one-horned rhinos. Many tourists visit the place every year to see them in their natural homes. Along with Rhinos, this park is home to a variety of flora and fauna species. This place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it has ⅔ of the World Rhino population.
People who come here can enjoy a gypsy or elephant safari in this wild park. Many animals can be seen during the safari including one-horned rhinoceros, Asiatic elephants, Wild Water Buffalo, swamp deer, hog deer, gaurs, tigers, leopards, jungle cats, fishing cats, Indian gray mongooses, Bengal foxes, etc. This huge park also gives shelter to more than 480 species of birds with a lot of reptiles and insects. Because of this many sightings, it’s a famous tourist spot among wildlife lovers and photographers alike.
After sightings of the wildness and a thrilling gypsy safari or Kaziranga Elephant Safari, people can go to some nearby attractions near kazirang other than Kakochang Waterfalls or Orchid Biodiversity Park, etc. We have found some nice places to visit in the area that are lesser known among people who come for a ride at Kaziranga National Park.
1. Birangana Sadhani Kalakshetra
This attraction is at a distance of around 80 km from the park and it’s a beautiful place to visit. This place is named after the last great Chutiya queen Sati Sadhani. This attraction is located in Selengi Gaon at a distance of around 3 km from Golaghat town. The construction of this place was started back in 2009 to attract the tourists visiting the district. The place features a life-size statue of Birangana Sati Sadhani that was designed by eminent sculptor and retired Professor of Assam Agriculture University, Jorhat, Dr Ranjit Kumar Borua.
The place offers many things to have a nice time, it has an open-air auditorium, children’s park, boating lake, and serene natural beauty. If you’re coming in April then a visit to this place on 21st April would be great. Every year in Assam, the 21st of April is celebrated as Sati Sadhani Divas to honor the courage and sacrifices made by the Chutiya Queen who played a prominent role in the fight against the Ahoms.
2. Negheriting Shiva Doul
The Negheriting Shiva Doul is at a distance of around 78 km from the park and people can go there to spend some time in peace. It’s a temple dedicated to lord Shiva situated at a hillock of Dergaon in the 37th National Highway in Golaghat district. The Kacharis originally built this temple in the 8th century AD. Then because of some natural calamities, it was demolished and rebuilt by Ahom Swargadeo Rajeswar Singha in 1765. This beautiful temple was planned and designed by famous architect Ghanashyam Khonikar and the area around it is the natural habitat of a bird named Negeri. Because of that, Negheriting is the name of this place.
Many locals know this place as “Panchayatana Temple ” as four temples of other gods are present here namely the Vishnu, Ganesha, Surya, and Durga with Lord Shiva at this place. The main temple which is of Shiva is surrounded by other four temples and a Banalinga (Shivling) of 3 feet in diameter is established in the main temple. Here you can also find Rhesus macaque because this place is an inhabitant of a sizable population of these old-world monkeys.
3. Deopahar
This place is a nice tourist spot that is at a distance of around 50 km from Kaziranga National Park. The meaning of Deopahar is ‘the hill of the God’. It is an archaeological site and one of the most significant ancient heritages of Golaghat district located in Numaligarh. This place is spread over an area of over 135 hectares of land. The area is filled with ancient relics, monuments, and Shiva temples along with ancient sculptures, coins, temples, and bricks of various types. Numaligarh is prominently known as one of the archaeologically rich places of Assam. It has historical remains of the ancient temple, sculptures, and monuments that were excavated from the top of the Deopahar hillock.
This one is a popular tourist destination in Assam and also it has a protected archaeological park and site museum under the Directorate of Archaeology, Government of Assam. This archaeological site was a part of the Kingdom Jarasanda in ancient Assam, according to mythologies. Near this famous site, you can find Deopahar Hill which is also known as Deoparvat. On the top of this hill, there is an ancient stone temple. The construction of that ancient temple seems to have been incomplete or destroyed by the Assam earthquake of 1897.
4. Sri Sri Athkhelia Namghar
This one is a pilgrimage site that is around 97 km from the park. This site is located at Bosa Gaon of Golaghat, a place where three rivers Ghiladhari, Matrang, and Kakodonga meet. This place is around 18 km from Golaghat town on the bank of river Kakodonga. Athkhelia Namghar is a popular site and it has occupied an important space in the hearts of Assamese people. The name of this place comes from the eight Kuris or eight Paik families who initially had the duty of looking after the place and this forms the word Athkuriya, which later on became Athkhelia. Many devotees come here every year, especially during the month of Bhado or Bhadra (from August to September). Devotees from all over Assam and the Northeast come here during this time because, in this holy month, Paalnam is observed with Soudhyo Prosongo in Athkhelia Namghar.
5. Jugibari Beel
This is a beautiful lake that is at a distance of around 79 km from Kaziranga. It’s a scenic location that is situated at Jugibari village under Khumtai LAC of Golaghat district. This attraction is a center of village tourism as tens of thousands of tourists come here during the year. People who want to see a great view of sunrise and sunset should visit this lake because it creates a serene natural beauty with wonderful views. Visiting the place during winter would be more mesmerizing because many migratory birds visit during the season. This palace offers a charming natural green environment for the tourists coming here. This area also enhances women’s empowerment through the participation of women SHGs and community members. They can sell their food and handmade products to the visitors and tourists who come here.
