Elephant Safari
Going on an Elephant Safari in Kaziranga National Park is a great way to see the beautiful forests. In this ride, you will sit on the back of an elephant, around 9 feet above the ground. People say that tourism in Kaziranga National Park is incomplete without riding an elephant. This safari is a special treat for travelers because it lets you move around freely in the open areas. This ride is better than gypsy rides because you will explore the jungle without the disturbing sound of gypsy safari.
Kaziranga National Park is famous for having many one-horned rhinos, dense forests, and tall grass called elephant grass. The best way to see all the different animals in Kaziranga is by riding on an elephant's back. Through this safari, you can enjoy the scenery and see animals in their natural habitat without disturbing them.
This safari happens only during the early morning hours and it will take around 1 or 1 & ½ hours to explore the area. During the morning safari, you get to go through thick forests, cross rivers, and follow rough trails, which is exciting for people who love adventure.
Gypsy Safari
Another way to explore the wildlife of Kaziranga National Park is by going on a Gypsy safari. A Gypsy is a four-wheeler that has an open roof. If we compare gypsy safari and elephant safari then gypsy safari is faster and easier to ride. Many people come to Kaziranga to experience the Gypsy Safari ride. Both wildlife lovers and adventurous travelers like going on Gypsy rides because they cover a lot of ground in a short time.
You have to take a permit before going on a ride and it is advised that you should get that in advance. During the Gypsy safari in Kaziranga National Park, you can only go on specific paths that are decided by the forest officials. It happens in different zones and all of them have different routes.
You can enjoy this ride in the morning and evening and it will take around 2 to 3 hours to explore the area of the Kaziranga. Both timing offers different chances to see wildlife in their natural habitat.
Safari Zones
Kaziranga National Park is the prime wildlife tourism hub in Northeastern India. You can explore the park in gypsy safaris or elephant safaris. This huge park is divided into four tourism zones which are the Central Zone or Kohora Zone, Western Zone or Bagori Zone, Eastern Zone or Agaratoli Zone, and the Burapahar Zone or Ghorakhati Zone. You can enjoy gypsy safari in all four zones but elephant safaris are allowed only in the Central Zone and the Western Zone. Every zone has its features and uniqueness, and its entry gates.
Central (Kohora) Zone
The entry gate of this area is located in the small town of Kohora. This zone starts from the Mihimukh riding tower, which is also the Elephant safari starting point. You can enjoy gypsy safari as well as elephant safari in this zone. You can spot animals like Tiger, One-Horned-Rhinos, Wild buffalo, and Swap Deer in the Kohora zone.
Western (Bagori) Zone
The entry gate of this area is located in Bagori at the Kaziranga, tourists can take a gypsy or elephant safari from the Bagori tourism office, which is the starting point. This zone is famous among tourists with high chances of animal sightings. Animals like Rhinos, tigers, leopards, and deer are easily sighted.
Eastern (Agaratoli) Zone
The entry gate of this area is located in the small town of Agaratoli. This zone starts from the Agaratoli tourism office which is the starting point for gypsy safaris. You can also enjoy a boat safari in this zone of the park. This zone is best for bird watchers and photographers.
Burapahar (Ghorakhati) Zone:
The entry gate of this area is located in the Ghorakati village. The Rhinoland Park is the starting point for gypsy safari rides in this zone. This zone has a hilly terrain with beautiful scenic views. You can enjoy trekking in this zone and it is considered the best birding point.
Requirements of Safari bookings
- The full name, age, and sex of the tourist who is going to be on safari.
- The nationality of the tourist must be mentioned.
- You have to provide ID proof like a Driving license, Voter or PAN card, Passport, and Aadhar Card.
- Don’t forget to keep the original ID proof during your safari.
- Acceptable ID proofs for foreigners include the original passport.
- You have to mention the preferred traveling date & Safari timing.
- You can only enter the safari zone for which you have got the permit.

Tourists must have a permit to enter the park premises.

Entry permits once issued can not be cancelled or transferred.

You have to carry your original IDs during the safari such as your driver's license, passport, PAN card, voter card, etc. If the visitor is a foreigner then they have to carry their passport with them.

There are some designated routes for safaris, and they are fixed, those routes will not be changed even after the requests from visitors.

The Forest Department of Assam is solely responsible for any rescheduling or cancellation of permits. The decision of the forest department will be considered full and final.

Tourists must have to obey the rules that are informed by guides or written on notice boards and brochures.

Blowing horn, shouting, or using any tape recorder, transistor, or radio is strictly prohibited.

Permits are provided for particular zones, tourists can not enter other zones with the same permit.
Important Information
- ✅If you want a comfortable ride then book the whole safari for just four people.
- ✅You have to carry the hard copy of the permit because the soft copy is not accepted.
- ✅You should book your safari in advance because of the rush, on-spot booking can be difficult or not available.
- ✅You cannot enter the park without a trained guide or naturalist.
- ✅You cannot enter the park after sunset.
- ✅Don’t try to get down from the vehicle during your ride, it is strictly prohibited.
- ✅You cannot carry pets during your ride,they are not allowed inside the park.
- ✅ No modifications in time or zone, etc. can be made after online booking is completed.
- ✅If a booked gypsy is unavailable due to unavoidable reasons, then the entire booking amount will be refunded within two days.
- ✅Forest authority holds the right to modify or cancel permits due to unavoidable circumstances; their decision is final.
