Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga Safari Booking

Kaziranga National Park in Assam is famous all over the world for its one-horned rhinos and the tall grasslands, which give them a proper habitat to live. But every year, something big happens here that changes the whole forest for a few months - the floods. The park is located on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River. During the rainy season, the level of this river rises, and a large part of the Kaziranga National Park goes underwater.

For many people, floods sound scary and dangerous. But in Kaziranga, floods are actually a natural part of life. They bring problems, but they also bring many benefits to the forest. Because of these floods, the area of the park remains healthy. This blog will help you understand the condition through which Kaziranga goes when it gets flooded. You will also get to know what happens when the park gets flooded and how the animals react, how the forest changes, and why these floods are important for Kaziranga.

Flood Changes Everything

The rainy season in Kaziranga National Park normally starts from June, and it continues till the end of September or mid-October. During this time, the Brahmaputra River becomes very full because of heavy rainfall in Assam and nearby regions. For these months, people cannot make Kaziranga Safari Booking as the park remains closed. During these months, the Kaziranga remains filled with water, and it spreads across the grasslands, forests, and low-lying areas.

The tall elephant grass of the park gets covered in water, and the roads also get closed. This is not a safe season for humans to go inside the park. The small streams of the park turn into a river, and it looks like a giant lake with few trees and small land areas. The real change in this area happens during the rainy season.

Animals Start Moving

The first thing animals do when they see water levels rising in Kaziranga is walk towards higher areas of the park. They know which places are safe inside the forest because they have been living here for years, and it's their home. Mostly, Rhinos go towards the hills of Karbi Anglong. Other animals, like elephants and deer, also go to safe areas where water is low. Tigers of the park also move to dry spots, and they do it carefully and quietly.

Even the forest guards help the animals to go from one spot to another. They help them cross the roads that are near the park. Sometimes the roads outside the park also get busy with animals walking, which surprises people. But for the animals, this is a normal part of life during floods.

The Forest Gets Filled With Water

Most areas of the park get flooded with water, and it looks like a spot where animals are seen standing on small dry patches. The whole beauty of this spot changes. Animals like rhinos rest on higher mounds of land called “chapories.” Elephants move in water by lifting their trunks like snorkels. Deer wait patiently for the water level to go down. And, aquatic birds like storks, egrets, and kingfishers get excited because food becomes easier to find in water.

It looks difficult to remain safe and live in this area, but most of the animals of this wild park have learned to live with these floods. The animals of this park face this problem every year, and they know how to save themselves and where to go. So, the floods don’t harm the animals of Kaziranga National Park.

Floods Help the Forests

Even though floods look destructive, they actually help Kaziranga as the river water carries new soil that spreads across the park. This soil is good for the greenery of the park, as plants grow even better. Floods also remove the old, dry, and dead grass, which makes space for fresh green shoots. The new grass becomes fresh food for many animals like rhinos, elephants, and deer. These floods also remove the dirt from ponds and offer fresh water for everyone.

The floods are good for forest areas as they wash away all the dry leaves, old plant parts, and leftover waste from the forest floor. This keeps the ecosystem clean and healthy. And, after the floods, new grass grows quickly, and the forest becomes green again. That is why, even after facing the tough days of floods, the animals come back stronger.

Challenges During Floods

Floods are helpful for the forest areas of the park, but they are also challenging for the park authorities. During the rainy season, the young animals of the park, like fawns or Rhino calves, face problems. They are small and cannot swim well or walk very fast. Forest guards of the park go on rescue boats, and they take those small animals and move them to safe areas. Also, animals sometimes go to the villages and outside forest areas. For going to higher areas or villages, the animals cross roads, and it can be dangerous because of vehicles. Forest teams work day and night during this time to control traffic and to help animals cross the roads safely.

During the floods, it also became difficult for animals to find food for a few days. Some areas of the park become totally underwater, and the animals find it harder to eat and find food. But this problem lasts only a short time until they reach higher land. During this time, the rescue team of Kaziranga National Park begins their work. The teams from the Forest Department and wildlife organisations travel on boats to save animals that are stuck in the water. And they also treat injured animals. Their hard work is one of the main reasons that this park survives the destructive flood every year.

Kaziranga Becomes Perfect After Floods

When the rain stops and the water slowly goes down, the forest starts changing again. The land that was underwater becomes green. New plants grow everywhere. Animals start returning to their original homes. The sound of birds fills the sky again. For Kaziranga, this time is like a fresh start. After the floods, people can go inside the park by making a Kaziranga Safari Booking. They can see the animals and explore the park on wheels. You can go on a safari inside the park and see the natural beauty, animals and birds in real life.
