Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga booking

Kaziranga National Park is located in Assam, one of the states of India. The park is famous for the Indian one-horned rhinoceros and other animals. But now, something new has happened. The park has started using technology not just to watch animals but also to listen to them.

A new project in Kaziranga used a different way to study birds. The team did not use binoculars or cameras to look at birds. Instead, they heard sounds that birds make. These sounds include bird calls & songs.

This bird study was done in the grassland areas of the park. Grasslands are large areas with grass and only a few trees. You can see them by making your Kaziranga booking for safaris. These areas are very important for many birds, but not many studies have been done in them.

This project was special. It became well known across India. Even the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, mentioned this in his radio show "Mann ki Baat". He said it was a good example of how technology can help us care for nature. This bird study also gives good ideas to other parks and countries.

Why This Bird Count Was Different

Most bird surveys are done by birdwatchers. These people use their eyes to see birds. They then try to name the birds they see. But in Kaziranga National Park, the team used a new way. They only used the sounds made by birds.

The study was also done only in the grassland areas, not in the forest or wetland parts of the park. This is important because some birds live only in grasslands. These birds are often missed in usual birdwatching because they are hard to see.

This study was the first time such a sound-based method was used in the grasslands of Kaziranga. The team recorded the sounds of over 40 kinds of birds. Many of these birds are not easy to see. Some are shy and hide when people are close.

Some birds are small and hide in grass or bushes, but they still make sounds. Scientists used these sounds to find and study them. This way, the birds acted normally because no humans were near. It also did not hurt birds or their homes, so it is safe for nature.

How The Technology Worked

The most important tool in this project was something called passive acoustic monitoring. This means using small sound recorders that listen and record nature sounds quietly.

These recorders can work in different weather, like rain, heat, or wind. The team placed these devices in many grassland spots, even in places where people cannot go easily.

The recorders worked for many days and nights. They collected many hours of sound. These sounds included bird calls, insect noises, wind, and other natural sounds.

Later, the scientists used a computer program with AI (Artificial Intelligence). This AI program was trained to recognize the sounds of different bird species. It listened to the recordings and told which sounds were from birds and which were not. It could even hear soft or short bird calls.

This method is very safe for birds. It does not use nets, tags, or anything that touches the birds. It only listens. This helps birds stay calm and safe. It also helps researchers save time, especially in large areas like Kaziranga.

This project shows that science and nature can work together. It is a new & easy way to study birds. It can also help in other places. When people make Kaziranga bookings, they usually think about seeing rhinos, but now bird lovers may also want to explore this park.

What The Study Found

The study found many types of birds in the grasslands of Kaziranga National Park. Some birds found were rare or in danger. Some are only found in this part of the world. These birds need special care and protection.

Some birds found are signs that the environment is healthy. When these birds live in a place, it usually means the area is good for animals and plants.

One very important finding was about a bird called the Finn’s Weaver. This bird is endangered and very hard to find. It is quiet and lives in the grass. Not much is known about how or where it breeds.

But it was in Kaziranga's Kohora Range that they recorded the sounds of Finn's Weavers. The sounds showed that a group of these birds was living & breeding there.

This is a very big discovery. It shows that some grasslands in Kaziranga are healthy. These grasslands provide a good living and breeding place for birds. It also shows that we must take care of these areas.

The study also proves that grasslands are important, just like forests and wetlands. Some birds only live in grasslands. If these areas are not protected, these birds may disappear too. So, this study helps in planning better ways to care for nature.

What Prime Minister Modi Said

This project was discussed by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, in his "Mann ki Baat" radio address. He said it was a great use of technology to help protect nature.

He said most people know Kaziranga because of rhinos. But now, because of this bird study, people are learning that the park also has many birds.

PM Modi also said that using AI to find birds through sound is smart. It is respectful because it does not disturb the birds. It also helps people know more about birds and can make young people more interested in science & nature.

His support made the project more popular in India. It showed that science can help the environment, too.

Why This Project Is Important For The Future

This bird sound project is useful for the future. It provides an alternative way for learning about nature. This method can be used in many places like forests, lakes, hills, and parks.

It is not costly and easy to use. You only need a few sound recorders and a computer. It does not need big teams or machines. Anyone can try it, even with a small group.

Many birds and animals are at risk. Their numbers are going down. To save them, we must know where they live and how they are doing. Listening to their sounds can help.

This project in Kaziranga National Park helps protect birds and gives better ways to study them. It brings together modern tools and local knowledge. If you want to see this work, you can make a Kaziranga booking for a safari.
